The Trip

The objective of the day was to get from Guadalupe Canyon through the border at Tecate and then get back to San Diego.  This had been a great trip and the weather could not have been much better. All things considered, it had gone well,  even in the face of some significant obstacles.  The team is great and we all had fun. Final score: no mechanical failures; 1 de-bead; no injuries; no illness.

A great mass of hash browns.

Many eggs were used for the scramble.

Chicken fried steak to go with the eggs, hash browns, biscuits and gravy.

Cooked soft, please.

Biscuits baked on the grill. We had to turn them once, but it worked great.

Ready to serve.

The post-breakfast stupor. Note the tequila bottles on the table.

As we were packing, the clouds started to close in. A bit later, it would start to rain lightly.

A parting view of our hot tub.

Excess water from the springs makes the exit quite messy.

A high speed run across the now wet Laguna Salada left huge clumps of mud on the truck. Note the heap on the lower step about 8" thick. This is slick, clay-based mud that really sticks to everything.

The trip out was uneventful.  Long, but uneventful.  Kai had some fuel problems but they were easily resolved. We elected to cross at Tecate rather than Otay Mesa. This was a good choice as the crossing was quite reasonable 15 minutes). This trip, overall, was perhaps the best trip yet. The side excursion to Guadalupe was just the ticket. The hot mineral springs were a great contrast to the stark beauty of the dunes.

We had great fun and we are already planning our next expedition. We have not decided where we will be going, but it will not be the Altar. Stay tuned for more details.
